PBS originated in the 1930s, but limited by the technological conditions at that time, the molecular weight of the synthesized PBS was too low to be used. Until the 1990s, with the deepening of research, high molecular weight PBS that meets the requirements of practical applications was successfully developed. At present, PBS series polyester has become a kind of biodegradable plastic with the largest production capacity in the world. As of 2020, the global production capacity of biodegradable plastics is about 1.03 million t/a (excluding starch and cellulose plastics), and the production capacity of PBS series polyester is about 460,000 t/a, accounting for 45% of the total production capacity.

PBS is an aliphatic polyester formed by polycondensation of succinic acid and 1,4-butanediol (BDO). Enzymes in animals and plants decompose, and the final decomposition products are water and CO2. PBS has flexible molecular structure design, and can be modified by introducing other monomers to form derivative materials. Due to the limited supply capacity and high cost of the raw material succinic acid, PBS derivative products PBSA, PBAT, and PBST came into being, collectively called PBS series polyester.

Partial or complete replacement of succinic acid with adipic acid and terephthalic acid can not only reduce the cost of raw materials, but also play a role in material modification. Compared with hard and brittle PLA, PBS series polyester is a "soft plastic", which has the advantages of good flexibility, wide temperature tolerance, easy storage, and strong controllability of degradation cycle. Among them, PBAT is easy to obtain because of its raw materials, and combines the excellent degradation performance of aliphatic polyester and the good mechanical properties of aromatic polyester.
