Hasso von Pogrell, Managing Director of European Bioplastics (EUBP), said: "The aggressive development of bioplastics capacity needs to be seen in the wider global context of the climate crisis, rising energy costs and value chain disruptions. However, despite these challenges, bioplastics Production capacity is still growing. This once again shows the resilience and importance of our industry.
According to EUBP, global bioplastics production capacity will increase significantly from about 2.23 million tons in 2022 to 6.3 million tons in 2027. Bioplastic alternatives exist for almost all traditional plastic materials and corresponding applications. Production capacity will continue in the next 5 years due to strong development of polymers such as PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate), polylactic acid (PLA), bio-based PA (polyamide), and steady growth of bio-based polypropylene (PP) Significantly increased and diversified.
According to EUBP data, packaging remains the largest application area for bioplastics, accounting for 48% (1 million tons) of the entire bioplastics market by 2022. The data also confirms that bioplastic materials are already used in many other fields and the application portfolio continues to diversify. The EUBP forecasts that sectors such as automotive and transport, agriculture and horticulture, and electrical and electronics will continue to grow moderately in relative share in the coming years.
According to EUBP data, Asia remains its main production center for regional capacity development, and currently produces slightly more than 40% of bioplastics in the region. Currently, a quarter of the production capacity is still located in Europe. However, the share of Europe and the rest of the world is expected to decline significantly over the next five years. In contrast, the EUBP claims that Asia is expected to exceed 60% by 2027. Van Pogrell added: "In the next few years we will see an incredible increase in the production of bioplastics. However, the big question is whether Europe still wants to play a major role in the World Bioplastics Alliance, or abandon its commitment to innovating sustainable materials." Leadership in the field? Investment in infrastructure and research requires the right political and economic framework conditions. European policymakers should therefore take advantage of the many initiatives linked to the European Green Deal to explicitly recognize and promote bio-based and compostable plastics .
Land used to grow renewable feedstock for the production of bioplastics is estimated at 0.80 million hectares by 2022 and continues to account for just over 0.01% of the global agricultural area of 5 billion hectares. With the estimated increase in global bioplastic production over the next five years, the land use share of bioplastics will increase to below 0.06%. Van Pogrell continues: "This share is still small relative to the available agricultural area. Therefore, there is no competition between renewable raw materials for food and feed and the production of bioplastics, with more than 90% of the global agricultural area used for pastures, Feed and food. This is also crucial in the political debate on land for biobased industries".
