Korea develops 4 biodegradable fishing net materials

It is reported that Yizheng Chemical Fiber Bona Company has also carried out research and development of fully biodegradable fishing net lines. In addition, scientists from Cornell University in the United States have also developed a new environmentally friendly material called iPPO, which can decompose faster under ultraviolet radiation.

In order to reduce ghost fishing gear and protect the marine ecosystem, the National Academy of Fisheries Science of Korea has newly developed 4 kinds of biodegradable fishing net materials.

Ghost fishing gear refers to fishing gear that is discarded during the fishing process. It is generally made of plastic materials such as nylon. This material is difficult to decompose in a short time, and it is easy to wrap around the necks and fins of marine organisms. He couldn't breathe and eventually died.

The four materials newly developed by the National Academy of Fisheries Sciences are BEAS, PBEAS+AH, PBES, and Bio-PBS, which will be decomposed by microorganisms after a period of time in the sea, which can greatly reduce resource loss and environmental pollution caused by ghost fishing gear.

In 2005, the National Academy of Fishery Sciences first used PBS as a raw material to develop a microbially degradable crab net, and popularized it at the fishing site. But the fishing net made of this material is only suitable for catching bamboo crabs, not for swimming crabs, yellow croaker, etc., and the price is 2-3 times higher than that of ordinary fishing gear.

Since 2016, the National Academy of Fisheries Sciences has started to develop fishing gear materials with higher cost performance and wider application range, and finally successfully developed the above four kinds of biodegradable fishing net materials. The new material has been improved in terms of toughness, softness, decomposability, and environmental protection, and the cost has also been reduced (5%). It will be effectively promoted and applied in reducing ghost fishing gear and protecting the environment.

The technology has been transferred to biodegradable plastics company Ankor Bioplastics, which produces about 350 tons of biodegradable fishing netting wire per year, which has been exported to the United States and sold on Amazon. The raw material for the new generation of fishing nets is the new biodegradable thermoplastic polymer PBEAS. The replacement cycle for the biodegradable fishing nets is about one year, which is shorter than the two-year cycle for using nylon, but the new nets perform much better than previously developed prototypes. Note: The full name of PBEAS is polybutylene succinate co-butylene adipate co-ethylene succinate co-ethylene adipate, butylene succinate-butylene adipate-ethylene succinate-ethylene adipate copolymer.

ANKOR BIOPLASTICS

The predecessor of ANKOR BIOPLASTICS is TLC Korea, which was established in Gangwon-do, South Korea in 2012. It has long been engaged in the development of biodegradable materials PLA and PBS products.

In 2019, An Phat Holdings invested in TLC Korea and changed its name to Ankor Bioplastics, which also became the research and development center of An Phat Holdings in the field of environmental protection materials and products.

ANKOR BIOPLASTICS has the biodegradable and environmental certifications of OK COMPOST in Belgium, DIN in Germany and BPI in the United States.

Vietnam Anfa Holding Group

Vietnam An Phat Holding Group is now one of the leading companies in Southeast Asia in the field of advanced technology and environmentally friendly plastic production. Its subsidiary PBAT An Phat is the largest green material factory in Southeast Asia in the future, with a production capacity of 30,000 tons per year and plans to start production in 2024.

Henan Techuang Biotechnology Co., Ltd. is a modern green and environmental protection enterprise integrating R&D, production, sales and technical services, providing services for biodegradable plastic bags and products.
